I saw Fran running to one of the caravans on her site, the one where Sahara lives with her mum and dad. I saw her, and Sahara’s mum, the tall one, at the door of the caravan, in tears. It was late afternoon, but they made so much noise, not that I could make out the words. I saw Fran gesturing something with her hands, showing the action or the size of something. I could see the other woman repeatedly bringing her fingers up to her face, her eyes, seemingly not saying much. Fran stayed at the van for a while; I couldn’t tell if she was angry or not. There seemed to be a lot of tears.

Bruno, he’s been here again. It seems to be helping, what with everything that’s been going on lately. He still comes round after school some afternoons, has told his mum he’s got art or music classes or something. He told me that he loves to draw birds, any birds, but mostly the ones he sees on the beach. I had a vision of the bird’s wing he brought to me the other day, the wing I had to dispose of. Today, Sahara came too. She walked straight to my trailer. Bruno left her, walked away when she came up my steps, went to look for Charlie, as usual. Didn’t find him. I don’t know where he’s got to. Seems these kids would rather hang out here than with their real parents, though. Sahara tells me, again, that her dad has disappeared. I didn’t know how seriously to take this comment, I let it become buried under the ravel of stories she was telling me about school. I didn’t bother telling her that my brother disappears from time to time too, but only when he’s particularly upset about something, usually. She’d probably think it was normal for Romany men to travel away.
